Latest happenings ...

Happy new week all (which, of course, means it's time for an update) ...

The weekend wasn't very restful, but it was productive. We totally redid the fireplace. It looks really good now. No more ugly red brick. We covered that with the slate tiles that are in the entryway and then I built a mantle that looks pretty good. We just have to grout it now.

We also mixed in some family time and helping some friends move. Paul and Cara are gone, so we've been using their pool almost everyday which is fun! Emma has really progressed a lot. She'll jump in where she goes under water and swim a bit with her face in the water. She'll also let me throw her up in the air. She's really cute when I throw her or especially when she jumps in because she does it with so much gusto, jumping high in the air and really enjoying it. We've been doing a little thing too where she gets on top of a boogey board, with almost her whole body out of the water, and then I push her and she goes all the way to the other end of the pool. She really likes that. That's how I've enticed her to push her self (I'll push you on the "surf board" if you jump in right there). Timmy is doing okay with swimming. He'll jump out a short distance to me and does fairly well kicking with a little bit of dog paddling, but definitely wants no part of getting his face wet. He's a very cautious boy! He also get's cold pretty quick so spends quite a bit of time playing outside the pool.

Other than that, I helped some folks from Emma's pre-school move on Sunday and we went to a picnic for Emma's VBS.

Adios for now,
Neal

Keeping up to date

So as not to fall too far behind, I thought I'd drop an early-ish mid week note. We've got the normal stuff going on here, although I guess you might call it Disney week. Cyndie pass it about to run out (I think at the end of the week), so she thought that she and the kids would hit the Magic Kingdom one more time. So they are making the most of the overcast weather to hopefully get in a lot of rides and stuff. Tomorrow, she and Monique are going on a Moms only trip, so I'm sure they'll have fun with that.

On the kitchen front, we're trying to not slack off to much, so we're planning on working at least an hour each night. Last night, I put up the middle over counter cabinet including wiring the lights inside the glass doors. Cyndie did some painting. I think the plan for tonight is to put up the side over island cabinets and maybe a bit more painting.

Other than that, we're just slowly counting the days until our trip in a week and a half!

Emma and the kitchen

Well, things are improving on the Emma front. While she is still a bit freaked out about her injury every once in a while, on the whole, she is recovering quickly. She is becoming a very able "hopper", jumping around the house on one leg. Couple that with her crawling skills, and she is getting around very nicely. She's going to stay home from school today, but Cyndie is hoping that the carrot of bringing snacks on Friday (which gives the snack bringer extra priveledges that day) might entice her to school then. It's kind of weird. She says she is "afraid" (her word) to tell people that she hurt her foot and doesn't want people to know. I think she is more embarrassed, and doesn't know the right word to use. Cyndie has been a bit under the weather the last few days too, so hopefully she'll be able to continue to have energy and will also be feeling better soon.

Last night we worked a bit on the kitchen. I put in one of the cabinets above the island and Cyndie put in one of the "built in" silverware holders. More work is on the schedule for tonight.

That's about it!

Easter weekend

Hey all, here's the Easter recap ...

As you should have all seen, the granite is in. It looks great. Wednesday it was installed (with much chemical smell). The smell is pretty much gone now. That night Cyndie and I spent most of the evening putting the sink fixtures in and connecting the stove. Now most of the kitchen is functional. The only remaining major things are installing the microwave (enroute from Ohio via an internet purchase), and the hood (bought on Ebay, now sitting in our dining room). Also the last cabinets need to be installed (also sitting in the dining room). I'm going to shoot for the last cabinets on Tuesday night so that the fabrication folks can come back out and install the remaining back splash.

We had a nice weekend. Lee and Kim came down on Friday night and spent the night. They picked up Chinese on their way in so we ate that for dinner, then hung out the rest of the evening (and stayed up too late). Gene and his family stayed in their RV on the street after having spent the day at the beach. (Emma adores her big cousin Brandon and follows him everywhere). Saturday I watched the Liverpool game (2 - 1 victory) in the early morning, then Gene, Pam, and all the kids came in for breakfast, so we really broke the kitchen in. After that, some of the group went down to the go-kart racing place I went to a few weeks ago and we raced. That was fun! Then we dropped Gene and his crew at the beach and went back home for lunch and quiet time. We went down to the beach for late afternoon, dinner on the pier at Ruby's, and then hanging out at the bonfire. By this point (the fire), Emma had calmed down a bit and was no longer hanging on Brandon all the time. I think both she and he finally were able to enjoy playing together which was good.. It was a very nice and relaxing day.

Sunday was early church. There was a breakfast at church at 8, the service at 9, and an egg hunt to follow. Emma and Timmy got little baskets ... a few books for both, a shield for Timmy, and a Strawberry Shortcake craft kit for Emma. The rest of the day was low key. Cyndie isn't feeling real well, so she slept from 3 - 5 while the kids and I went in search of a replacement scooter for Timmy. We bought him a two wheeler a week ago, but it was broken. I was surprised to find that both Target and Wal-Mart were closed for Easter. I didn't think that those types of places would be closed in California! Anyway, it felt like we drove all over kingdom come before we actually found a place open (Sports Chalet). We had a pretty good time though, and gave Cyndie a quiet house to sleep in. Back home, we spent the rest of the afternoon outside scootering. I think I'm going to have to buy myself a scooter so that I can keep up with them ... especially Emma, who is a scooter wiz!

So that's about it for now. Emma is back in school this week and so (hopefully) we'll have a quiet week.

the granite is in ...

the granite is now in ... and here are the first pictures.

the other night cyndie and i sat down to list out what we have left to do on the kitchen. it came out to like 30 or more things ... a little depressing. oh well, the kitchen is now very usable. we have the microwave on the way - we ordered it on line - and the hood is currently in the back of cyndie's truck. so all the major purchases are out of the way. now it's just a matter of finishing it all off.

Midweek happenings ...

There's not a whole lot to report lately. Things are falling a little bit more back to the normal routine of things. Yesterday Cyndie and I went to the granite fabrication place (where they cut the slab, and they are also the installers) to approve how they are going to cut the granite. That was fun. The granite is scheduled to get installed next Wednesday, so that will be a huge milestone! After that, the kitchen will really be usable. There are still a ton of little things to do, but we're moving along. The house is pretty much put back together now, and I think that has really helped to improve the attitude of the kids. They're going to Disneyland today (I think it's one of the last days that they can before the passes run out). Last night while Cyndie was out for coffee with Monique, I attached some of the knobs on the cabinets. It certainly changes the feel of the kitchen a bit since we're so used to not having them. I also discovered that the bolts that where included with the pulls were not long enough! Here are pictures of the knob and pull:

The pix are kind of out of proportion ... the knob is 1 inch square and the pull is one inch high by around 3 inches.

Tuesday night Emma and I had a date. We went to Target to get her some new sandals for the summer. She looked for and box which had sandals in it which had a "12" tag and tried probably 20 different pairs of shoes on. She really got a kick out of walking with the elastic cord still attaching the shoes together. In the end she got some Hello Kitty sandals that are pink and have a lot of sparkly little gems on them. We also picked Timmy up some new sandals, size 10. He has huge feet! On the way home we stopped at Coldstone to get ice cream. Emma always likes to get the "blue kind" (cotton candy). Cyndie said that she and Timmy had a really good time playing swords while we were gone.

More Deliquency

Ah, so I'm back ... I can't think what has made the week any more busy than normal, but nonetheless, I have failed to submit any posts thus far.

So the injury ... last Saturday when Paul and I were putting in the island cabinets, while not even using any tools, let alone power tools, I somehow got something in my eye (this was around 11:30). So I tried to get it out, and then Cyndie tried to help, and an hour later it was still in there even though Cyndie couldn't see a thing. It wasn't painful, just extremely irritating. So finally Paul too me to urgent care. There I saw a doctor and he looked all around in my eye, and checked for scratches, and found nothing! How irritating (in a couple of ways). So he gave me these eye drops which killed the irritation immediately. So I'm thinking, great, I'll get back to work! But by the time I got home, the effect had worn off and the eye was killing again. So the rest of the day (save for the two hour nap in the afternoon), the eye was irritating. Not when it was perfectly still, but "only" when I blinked or moved my eye (i.e. all the time). So I just basically sat there and held my eyelid still with my hand for most of the day. Praise God, the next morning when I woke up, all was back to normal. I guess that the antibiotic ointment that the doctor prescribed helped a lot, or else my eye just naturally cleaned itself out during the night.

Sunday we pretty much finished off all the island "stuff". So now all the cabinets are in and the plywood is down. The granite fabricators came by yesterday to make templates of how to cut the granite. So we're getting very near to a fully usable kitchen. We even got our Target.com order of bar stools only two days after ordering them!

The kids are good. They seem to be "equalizing" a bit (probably helped by the fact that the kitchen and downstairs are a little less chaotic now). Monday was open house at Emma's school, so it was fun to go and see what she does there. Today Cyndie and Emma are going to Disneyland with Monique and Macy to go to the Princess lunch in California Adventure. So that's the big happenings.

weekend's work in pix

hey all, just pix tonight. if i have time tomorrow, i'll give you the lowdown on my injury that cost me half a day's work on saturday.

here is cyndie painting - that is her usual evening task - this time the ceilling.

here's the island in and with the plywood down ... it's about square 78 inches by 81 inches. There will be cabinets on the wall when we're done, but the countertop has to go in first because the middle cabinets will rest on the countertop.

another view of the island ... the eating area/bar is on the closest and the right side ... on either side of the leg you can see in the foreground.

i told cyndie she had to lay on the counter to give a better perspective of how big the island is. everytime cyndie sees it she can't believe how big it is ... in a good way I hope! ;)

This is the type of granite we're getting ... it's kind of similar to this ... a little more black and white with less gray and the tan more as the accent. the fabricators, who cut the granite, are coming out to measure on wednesday.

A Vision for completion

Good morning all,

Today Cyndie and I are going to the granite yard to more seriously look for our countertop. We went last week, but took the kids. That trip was informative, but not horribly productive. We went to Home Expo last night on our date (to look at door/drawer handles) and ended up looking at their selection of granite. We found out that (in the salesperson's opinion at least) the advantage of going through them is that they sell by the square foot as opposed to most granite yards selling by the slab. So, anyway, it will be interesting to see what we come up with!

We're hoping to have the island installed by the end of the weekend (and possibly the plywood under counter as well). That would be nice because it would mean that the whole kitchen would be usable. Then it will just be the long work of actually finishing all the little things!

The family side of things continues to be a struggle with Emma and Timmy in a ornery mood of late. That's another reason to get the "main" part of the kitchen done ... less choas around the house. Emma has decided that she wants to take roller skating classes instead of playing soccer. Cyndie said last night (at dinner - out), "I think Emma is going to take the cheerleader route more so than the jock route. Her interests do tend to go that way. Although I think it would/will be wierd to go to a sports event to watch the cheerleaders! Timmy, on the other hand, seems to be more the sporting type. At least at this point he has no patience for anything that is not all action (I'm thinking more soccer than baseball). In his gymnastics class he wasn't really into the waiting between doing the different activities. But who knows what he'll be like in a few years when he's actually starting to think about those things.

Picture Post

Here's the crew with the first cabinet up.The results of our labors ... in the bottom corner is a lazy susan. The hole you see is where the microwave will go. It will have a trim kit around it so that it looks built in. The tall cabinets on the right are a pantry with pull out shelves.

The Living Room is getting much less crowded by the day, especially since I've moved all the island cabinets into the kitchen for placement (hopefully this weekend).

Getting closer! The sink, dishwasher, fridge, and freezer are in and being used!

Apparently I've Been Deliquent!

Hey all,

It appears that I have not posted for a while. I don't know that I have anything horribly interesting or insightful to post. The weekend was fairly standard. We eased back a bit on the kitchen in order to give the kids a bit of a break. Saturday we went to the beach in the morning ... it was actually fairly cool (50s). But it was a nice break anyway. Cyndie and I adjusted a few of the cabinets (those over the freezer/fridge) to hang out a little more ... hard to explain, but the look is very good. In the evening we went to Paul's birthday party which was pretty fun. There were lots of people, mostly friends from the private school that their kids go to, but also some from the neighborhood. It was a totally different crowd than I'm used to being around, but rather interesting as a result.

Sunday was church. I played bass again which was fun (I even did a little solo introduction to one of the songs!). Then in the afternoon it was again rather low key. I had put the cabinets for the island in rough place, just so Cyndie could get a look. They definitely make the room feel smaller since we've been used to having that big open place for a while. So after looking at those for a day or so, we decided that was indeed what we wanted, so I cut the laminate floor to fit the cabinets. Probably tonight, after Bible study, I'll start with some installation. In the evening we had KidWorld. It was a really nice evening weather-wise. We stayed for a while afterwards for the kids to play because it was still light and the temperature was avery pleasant 60s.

The kids continue to be pretty out of synch, in large part, I think, due to the chaos of the construction. Hopefully we'll be getting much more back to normal in the next week or two.

That's it for now,
Neal

Slow ...

Not a whole lot to report today ...

Cyndie and the kids laid low yesterday. Cyndie was able to make a bit more sense of the house now that we have a bit more room to work with, so we're not quite so crowded which was very nice. In the evening we had Bible study, and then after that and getting the kids to bed, we were pretty beat, so just hit the sack our selves.

Tonight Cyndie has Bunko, and I'll work on the stove and probably some other random stuff too.

Thursday we're planning on going up to Anaheim to try to find some granite.

The first cabinets are in!

Well, we had a lot of visible progress in the kitchen over the weekend (sorry, no pictures for now).

Friday afternoon and evening we spent priming and then painting the kitchen end of the room. It wasn't perfect (since we were largely working in the evening when the light wasn't great since most of the light bulbs aren't in the recessed lights), but works for the most part.

Saturday, after the soccer game, Paul, Lee, and I started working on the cabinets (not those above the island). By noon, we had hung all the hanging cabinets. Paul had to leave then, but Lee and I spent the rest of the day, and Sunday afternoon working. So the end result as of last night was that all the cabinets on the external walls, save the hanging one right next to the door, are up. We have plywood in place as a temporary countertop (and I believe that is what the granite rests on). The sink is inplace and useable (complete with garbage disposal). The dishwasher is hooked up and in use, and the fridge and freezer (with working ice maker) are on. So it was a pretty productive weekend.

Tonight, I'm going to temporarily hook up the stove, and proably try to paint som more.

Fresh pix ...

Here are some fresh pix of the completed drywall ... the plan is to prime in the late afternoon and then paint behind where the cabinets are going to be in the evening after the kids hit the sack. Then tomorrow, we'll start hanging cabinets!

Thursday update ...

Hey all, here's a Thursday update coming at you ...

Not a whole lot out of the usual happening family wise. The kids had gymnastics on Tuesday. Last night we ended up driving over to Mark and Moniques to drop off a birthday present for Macy ... she was sick on her birthday, so Emma wanted to cheer her up. We ended up staying for cake, so that never hurts! On the way over and the way back, we tested out the new in car DVD system that Grandmas Cathy and Weaver bought the kids for Christmas. That was a lot of fun. The kids really liked it (they each have their own screen) and so did the parents! Timmy has be regularly sleeping in his big boy bed, but has also been waking up early (at 5:30). We think the light may be too bright, so I'm going to put a dimmer switch on his nightlight and see if that helps out. Since the living areas of the house are so tight, we're trying to stay out of the house as much as possible, especially in the evening.

The kitchen progresses as well. We really haven't worked much on it ourselves the last few nights as we're just waiting for the contractor to finish up their stuff (drywall mostly). Anyway, that should finish up today (they need to finish mudding and then texture everything). Unfortunately, it won't be dry enough to work with on Friday, so the Friday work day I had scheduled (with help from Paul and Dan), is being pushed to Saturday and will be Paul and Lee. It sure looks a lot different with all the dry wall up. I'll take some pictures on Friday evening after we paint and try to get those out to you over the weekend.

Neal
So that's it from here.

Hey all, here are a few more pix.

Here is the island wall with the sheer wall added:
Here is the dining/living room will all the stuff in it ... it all got piled in here a day early when the contractor called and said he could come early.
Here are the can lights over the island (with space for the hood to fit into).
And here is the first cut at drywall ... they hung it today and will tape and mud it tomorrow (as well as texturing it).

That's all for today!

Weekend Summary

Hey all,

Here is the summary of the weekend accomplishments and general happenings.
The kitchen progressed nicely ... so well, in fact, that we didn't even work on it last night! We got all the electrical done including splitting the 220V into 2 110V lines. All the circuits work. The only snag there was that one of the recessed lights has a bad transformer, so I had to pull that one out. The sheer wall is up. All the cabinets are gone (including the sink, stove, and dishwasher). It's pretty bare in there! There was a little bit of mold behind the sink cabinet, so we removed that drywall. I think tonight will be patching the drywall and just doing miscellaneous things to get ready for drywalling (Wednesday), painting (Thursday), and hanging cabinets (Friday). I'll try to take a few pix to capture the latest progress.

Family wise, it was a pretty low key weekend. The kids hung around the house for most of Saturday with a few trips to the park. Sunday was church (I played the bass which was a lot of fun) and then Lee was down for the afternoon to help with the demolition. He joined us for dinner at KidWorld, but left before the show.

So that was the week in review. Other than construction, I don't think we have a lot of big events coming up this week.

Getting Closer!

Wel, we're getting closer to dry wall in the kitchen. Cyndie has been working on cleaning out the cabinets (the old ones) and I'm finishing up the wiring. I'm almost there, I just have to split the 220V line into 2 110V lines (a friend is coming over this morning to help with that) and then position a few of the under cabinet feeding lines to come through the drywall in the right place. The friend (Jim's dad Stan) is also going to make a final check of all my wiring to make sure it looks good (he's a retired electrician and inspector). Then I just need to get up the sheer wall. I think we'll wait until Monday night to pull the counters out so that we have the sink a little longer. The drywall guys are not coming until Wednesday now due to a scheduling conflict. Although they are coming today to start the stucco (it takes 3 or 4 applications). We're planning on the first round of cabinet installation for March 2. I've enlisted Paul and Dan to help! Unfortunately, I may not be as productive this weekend as my help has backed out. (Sorry Lee, I just had to get a little dig in -- Lee was going to come, but then got a free ticket to the races!)

Yesterday Cyndie and the kids went to Disneyland. They brought Coco, and ended up coming home with a new outfit for Coco and for Spot (Timmy's leopard). Coco now has a fairy outfit and Spot is Buzz Lightyear. Timmy slept in his big boy bed again, so that is exciting. Hopefully he's almost fully adjusted there.

Paul should be here anytime for the Liverpool game, so so long for now, and have a great weekend.

Quick Friday Note ...

Hey all,

Just a quick note today ...

Yesterday was pretty much a downer. The kids were crabby all day for Cyndie (including a trip to the doctor for Cyndie and Emma for Emma's ear infection) which made for a long day for her. I had to stay late at work for a lame meeting! Needless to say, Cyndie was in bed by 8pm and I wasn't much later.

Today and through the weekend is the big push to get the kitchen done for drywalling on Monday. I think the kids and Cyndie are going to Disneyland.
