So we're sitting around the table last night, and with the "nice"* weather and all, the talk turns to the boat. And with talk of the boat re-opens the naming discussion. Every boat needs a name, and the Wildwood DeVries have had our share of conversations over what we should name ours. Things ranging from something to do with the water (pretty deep, right?) to something with "Yellow" in the name (since the boat is largely yellow). So the discussion yesterday centered on two names ... Notacanoe (or maybe Nottacanoo or Nott-a-Cannoo we haven't discussed spelling at all) which Cyndie and I find very humorous, and Dragon Warrior which Timmy loves, but which is just kind of silly (as if Notacanoe is not silly?!). So Timmy is adamant. It has to be Dragon Warrior. He's starting to get a bit upset and belligerent as he is prone to do if you disagree with him (reference his yelling at Emma at the top of his lungs yesterday when he didn't think two plus nine was eleven and she did). I then, turned brilliant:
Neal: Tim, did you know that I speak Waukesha? Waukesha is the dialect of the Waukesha Indians.
Tim: (getting a little distracted from his naming anger) Really?
Neal: Yeah. Did you know that Warrior in Waukesha is Canoo?
Tim: (getting into it) oh.
Neal: And Dragon in Waukesha is "Notta".
Tim: (really warmed up now) alright.
Neal: So if we named our boat in the Waukesha dialect, it would be Nottacanoo ... Dragon Warrior. So the boat would be Dragon Warrior and it would be our special secret.
Tim: (excited now that he's "won") Yeah, that would be cool. (promptly getting distracted and losing interest in the whole conversation) Do I have to eat my peas?
The whole time Cyndie is busting up that Timmy was so easily distracted and derailed from his unrelenting grip on "Dragon Warrior".
So, there you have it. The (currently unofficial) name of our boat is Nottacanoo (aka Dragon Warrior).
*Nice is, of course, relative. It's been in the mid to upper 30s the last day or two with temps over the weekend headed into the 40s with some rain possible. I think spring is making a push. We're starting to see some ground through the snow where there is southern exposure. Good times are coming!
